How is basmati different from sela and other rice?

Basmati is a long-grain rice known for its aroma and for cooking up in separate, slender grains. It is the usual choice for biryani, pulao and plain steamed rice served with curry.

Sela rice is parboiled before milling, which makes the grain firm and less likely to turn sticky or break. Many cooks like it for biryani and for cooking in large quantities. Sona Masoori is a lighter, medium-grain rice often eaten in everyday South Indian meals, and kalijira is a small, fragrant grain used for special dishes.

What should you cook with basmati rice?

Basmati goes well with the meat and dal we also stock. You can pair it with chicken, goat or beef in a biryani or a curry, or serve it plain next to dal.

How do you rinse and store a big bag of rice?

Rinse basmati in cold water a few times until the water runs mostly clear. Many cooks then soak it for around 20 to 30 minutes before cooking, which helps the grains stay long and separate.

Keep a larger bag in a cool, dry place, and once it is open, move the rice to a sealed container so it stays dry and away from pests and strong smells.

Yes. We offer pickup every day from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, so you can plan a stop for a heavy bag of rice around your day. Our regular shop hours are 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM Monday to Friday, and 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday.
